Stay Tuna'd

The scary part of listening to a lot of Charlie Tuna shows is the end. It's amazing how many of the affiliate locations don't exist anymore or don't have an AFRTS station (I have the one for SCN as the logoff sound on one of my computers, "before we say goodbye.."). It's always great listening. Thanks again Charlie!

AFN 35th Anniversary 1978

Time to head to AFN and take a look at their 35th anniversary (1978).  Second time I've gotten the year wrong on that.  Thanks again Mark!
Part one was already on he other website, here's part two

Vaguely appropriate: I was on the air when Elvis died, when John Lennon was killed, even when Bing Crosby died. Somehow radio just really didn't do much for Michael Jackson.

This Web Page

Thanks for stopping by. We had some great collective memories of AFRTS. The biggest reason that I moved everything here was that you can leave comments and they're very welcome. I'd like the thank the AFRTS-LA talent for the work that they did. It was appreciated. I've received really nice email about this project from a lot of the AFRTS talent. Thank you for stopping by. If you enjoy the site, just tell a friend. Welcome to the neighborhood.

Gene Price

Gene did a SHOW, personable with characters and low-key comedy. While Gene was doing the show for AFRTS he also recorded recruiting shows for the army. Stations would bury these in the very late night or Sunday morning hours. Good radio though.

Date With Chris

Finally they've arrived, 5 disks from 1968-70, a little hacked up but I think we all are.  The disks themselves were from AFVN but the specifics are gone "Grampa brought them back from Vietnam."
Until I can get them transferred, this is from the archive..

Date With Chris

Chris had a fascinating story and career.

She needs our help for the vets shelter. Donate NOW. Thanks
DON TRACY - Don Tracy was another with a great career at AFRTS-LA and in Los Angeles radio: KGFJ, 1969-74; KDAY, 1976-90; KGFJ, 1993-94; KMBY, 1995; KABC, 1995-97. Following a stint in sales at KABC, Don has opened Malloy & Associates, an ad agency in the San Fernando Valley. This aircheck was recorded in Iceland.

Roland Bynum

One of the more distinctive voices from AFRTS-LA was Roland Bynum. Roland is one of the few jocks that I haven't been able to locate, but he always did a great show. Lately I've received a bunch of requests for his program. It was always "Good Bynum". Roland currently does shifts at Stevie Wonder's station in Los Angeles...and sounds GREAT.

Who Thinks The PAO was listening?

Here's live coverage from FEN August 5th and 6th 1964 of the Gulf of Tonkin, pretty much the beginning of the Vietnam War. (Thanks Chuck!)

Monte Jones

Monte Jones, an amazing talent. When I went through the DINFOS I was lucky enough to have both Bob Runda and Monte Jones as instructors. Did Mr. Runda ever do an airshift anywhere? A lot of broadcasters attempted to style themselves after Monte. Something I didn't know was that FEN at the time was using a primitive automation system. The first transcription disk would run out and start the second. The newscasts were all on tape. Since the 'automation system' required someone to feed it, it's difficult to imagine what was gained over using a board operator. Maybe a lifetime job for the automation operator.

Roland Bynum 1984 recorded in Iceland

Hooray Hooray, just received a 1945 script from AFRS Canal Zone. A very cool piece.
Weekends coming up, play these at the barbeque:
