Mr. DJ, Don't Play That Song
Eric Burdon - Sky Pilot
Simon and Garfunkel - Homeward Bound
Peter Paul and Mary - Leaving On A Jet Plane
Mel Tillis - Stateside
Barry McGuire - Eve Of Destruction
Freda Payne - Bring the Boys Home
Bobby Bare - Detroit City
Animals - We Gotta Get Out Of This Place
Boyd Bennett and his Rockets - My Boy Flattop
Edwin Starr - War
When I was in Panama and we had troops in Nicaragua, there was a rather crummy bigband song "Managua Nicaragua", recorded by both Freddie Martin and Guy Lombardo
Lyrics were rather interesting.
At AFKN-TDC they got a new general and a not very smart DJ dedicated Stevie Wonder's "You Haven't Done Nothin' Yet" after a diatribe. BAD idea.
Do they play Ray Stevens "Ahab the Arab" in Iraq/Afganistan?
What did you play that they didn't care for...

Heah comes da Wolfman

Wolfman will always be with us. There's the new show in syndication (AFRTS... BUY IT), some new cds and the website. http://www.wolfmanjack.org/
Let's revisit 1977. I was 20, in Korea and don't remember most of the year.
I met Wolfman at LAX when I came Stateside. Only time I was ever totally speechless at meeting a celebrity. Play it loud!

Staying Tuna'd

There's not a lot more to be said about Charlie Tuna than that he deserves his place in the Radio Hall of Fame. His website has many great bits. Take a look Charlietuna.com
The photo is Gene Price, Charlie and Jim Pewter and Jim Pewter.
The is a summer 1977 show recorded from AFN, including a newscast and break by Bill Swisher.

AFN Old Orleans

The network was in a lot of places, even exotic France. Before we were kicked out in 1968, we rocked 'em.
In 1964 Denny Crew was doing the "Surprise Package" program.
AFN Orleans 1964 - Denny Crew
He SAYS that it's folk music but it sure sounds hillbilly to me.
That command moved to Belgium. Is there anywhere good that the troops go today?

Thanks again to Ken for taking this AFKN network newsroom picture in 1968, in 1977 absolutely nothing had changed. I can smell the kimchi.

Thanks Garry!
Part of the wonderful nw material going in the archive are some things I hadn't heard before. I"m in the process of getting it all ready, but here are some treats.
Pete Smith took up the tradition of easy listening after John Doremus. He was another Los Angeles legend. KNX; KDAY, 1956-58; KRKD, 1958-61; KNOB; KPOL; KMPC, 1961-88; KJQI/KOJY, 1993-95; KGIL, 1998. Pete was part of "Music of Your Life."
Pete Smith Show
Herman Griffith brought modern soul to AFRTS. In the early 60s we got both Joe Allison for Country and Herman for soul. Both were trendsetters. Herman was on KGFJ 1963-66. He continued the show for us until at least 1970. What happened to him?
Herman Griffith 1964
Jimmy Wakely was country music, with successful movie television and radio career. Take a look at this. Jimmy was with us well into the 1980s.
