Andy Mansfield 1967
Andy Mansfield did his first oldies show with AFRTS in the 1950s. Andy and his wife Virginia "Turn Back the Clock" featured music from the turn of the century to the 1950s. In the 1960s the show was more focused and renamed "America's Popular Music". Here's a 1967 visit.
AFVN Day after Thanksgiving 1970
On Thanksgiving it's hard to not think about home. When Billy Williams was at AFVN a few years later, he found a station composite of the day after Thanksgiving with AFVN. Nicely done. Take a listen.
Happy Thanksgiving 1944
Surprisingly hard to find Thanksgiving shows. From 1944 Lionel Barrymore (Mr. Potter on It's a Wonderful Life) and an all-star cast share the holidays.
My best to you and yours.

Bill Stewart 1969
Today Bill talks with Mel Lewis and Thad Jones. They had a wonderful big band. The music's great and so is the conversation.
Jim Pewter 1980
Jim with Little Richard
Hey everybody, jump up in your seats.
Here is the man with a million beats.
They make you jump, they make you sing.
He'll do just about anything.
Everybody gonna rock and roll steady with the Jim Pewter Show.
Jim lived up to the slogan. I could always feel the respect and love for the music. He introduced me to a lot of amazing memories.
Hear Jim Pewter everyday at 6pm Central on www.mybestsounds.com
Don Tracy 1980
Don Tracy has some music to start the weekend. It's a Thursday show from 1980 but the concept works...

John Doremus 1967
I remember John Doremus and his overnight show, syndicated on some of the biggest AMs in the states, when there was such a thing. In flight music, without the flight. We had him on AFRTS.
Gene Price 1974
Gene Price and Marc Yablonka at a 1981 remote at Universal on KLAC.
Here's Gene in 1974 on the Country Express. There's some great opportunities in today's army!

AFN Jim Reeves Special 1973
Earl Freudenberg driving the train
It was the anniversary of the plane crash that took his life. Paul Kryer, one of the PD's. was good friends with Reeves. He produced his show when he came to Germany. He asked me to do a special.
Charlie Tuna 1982
Charlie Tuna and Sugar Ray Leonard
Charlie Tuna has always been a champ. This broadcast is from around the Leonard/Duran "no mas" fight. That was a night to be in Panama.

Roger Carroll 1972
In all of the stations we had promo photos of the AFRTS-LA talent. Roger really didn't like his. It wasn't a bad photo, but a very 1970s haircut. Here's something we can all agree on from 1972:
Mary Turner 1992
It was a scandal. In the early 80s when the network started the Mary Turner show. Loud Rock and Roll. What will the generals say? We'll find out. Mary brought her KMET show to the world and it was a very good thing.
Vance Graham 1973
Vance Graham, known as Victor, had been performing for the Armed Forces Radio and Television Service since the 1950s. Originally from Utah, he relocated to California in the 1930s and emerged as a leader in the Latino community.

Herman Griffith 1968
Indeed, the music was fantastic. Herman Griffith, who joined us from KGFJ, was known for not "hitting the posts." This was due to the lack of a proper headphone output when AFRTS upgraded their studios. Given his style, Herman relied on the headphone output more than others. His energy and the music are truly memorable.
America's Popular Music 1965
Andy Mansfield was with the network in the 1950s and 60s, playing records from his own collection.
Andy's original show was "Turn Back the Clock" with his wife, former big band singer Virginia. Always some interesting choices...

Bill Stewart 1969

Jim Pewter 1968
PV2 Jim Pewters and Jill St John in Korea 1964. Jill was with the Bob Hope show. Copyright Playground Productions. Courtesy Jim Pewter.
Jim Pewter has your favorite oldies. These guys did such a great job with Command Information. I was just listening to this one and realized I had spent a minute being interested in a spot about hepatitis . I would have been in Korea around this time. Street vendors, things swimming in the water. I did avoid the tattoo parlors..
Hear Jim every day at 6pm Central at www.mybestsounds.com
The music's great. C'mon down to the malt shop..
Don Tracy 1980
In 1968 Don Tracy was winning in Hartford. A handful of years later Los Angeles and the world...

Jim Ameche 1965
Jim Ameche was known for his soothing sounds, hosting a high-profile easy listening show. His career began in 1930s radio, portraying the original "Jack Armstrong, the All-American Boy." After his brother Don Ameche departed from the Chase and Sanborn Show, Jim took over as the announcer, enjoying numerous successes during the Golden Age of Radio. By the 1950s, he had become a successful DJ in Los Angeles and New York, eventually syndicating his show nationwide. It was also during this period that he signed with AFRTS, continuing his career into the 1960s. Jim passed away in 1983.
Joe Ferguson 1983
In 1983 Joe Ferguson was at KUPL. AFRTS picked him up for a series of shows from around the country, really being the voice of home. It's a Tuesday in 1983 and time for the Joe Show!
