Joe Ferguson 1983
It was a discussion we had many times ""There's no one good in Milwaukee, Miami, Dallas or anywhere else?" In 1983 the network bid out contracts with talent from all over the country. Joe Ferguson from Portland OR was with us for a while. On this show, Joe talks about being a dependent and in the radio club at AFN.

Joe Ferguson 1983
The majority of our programming was created at the McCadden Avenue studios. A lot of US syndicated programming found its way to us.
In 1983 they tried something different. AFRTS-LA reached out to jocks all over the country to do a series of shows for the worldwide audience. Joe Ferguson from KUPL in Portland OR was one that signed up.
"Actually my first radio was as a dependent high school student in the radio club, but it was in the castle at AFN Frankfurt..
Then after college as a DA civilian with Southern European Network, or SEN as it was known then."
Joe is sharing all of those shows with us.
Thank you Joe!

Joe Ferguson 1983
A young Joe Ferguson had done some shows as a dependent at the stations. Years later Joe was jocking in Portland OR. AFRTS had done one of the coolest things they ever did. Asked jocks from around the country if they'd like to do shows for the network. Joe saved his copies and made them available/ Thank you Joe!

I still say it was one of the nicest things the network ever did. For a while starting in 1983 AFRTS had jocks from all over the country do a series of shows and be the Voice of Home. One of the first was Joe Ferguson in Portland OR. Joe sent us copies of all of the shows. Thank you my friend!

AFN Teen Thirty 1965
The Frankfurt American High School started a radio club amongst students who were interested, and we produced and aired a weekly radio program on AFN Frankfurt. I believe the first year was the 1961-62 school year and they would bus us from the school out to the castle in Hochst where the studios were located, and we would record the program. I believe it aired on the weekend. There was music, school activities news and sports news. The first faculty adviser to the radio club was the speech and drama teacher, Catherine Rotter and she was great fun.
In the castle along with the studios, there also were barracks and an AFN club with a bar and pub food. My senior year, 62-63 I was the president of the club.
Imagine the effect on an impressionable teen, interested in learning something about radio. Having the opportunity to go to a real life castle with big gates and real turrets too was an amazing experience. And then, throw in studios just stuffed with all this nifty Grundig and Telefunken broadcast gear and all the AFN pro’s we got to work with. I was hooked!
Little did I know I would never work in another radio station that had its own bar complete with pub food; =) Or one that had a turret either.
Regards,
Joe
