AFN and Benny Brown

Talk about a neat career, as best I can put together Benny parlayed AFN into working at Radio Luxembourg when it was over one million watts of one of the coolest stations ever. Shortly after posting this Benny called me on Skype and I had the opportunity to speak with one of the greats.

Benny Brown AFN

Benny, still the perfectionist said that the show is Veterans Day 1995. The reason it wasn't tighter was that he was feeding the network. The show was clearly recorded from the transmitter in Bavaria/Franconia as it has "local Wuerzburg & Bamberg" spot announcements rather than the generic network spots.

Frank Bresee AFN tribute

Here's part one of the Golden Days of Radio tribute to AFN Europe on it's 45th anniversary (1988) Thanks Garry!!!

For the longest time, the people that collected stateside Old Time Radio primarily had a ton of GDOR shows and traded them back and forth. Today I can only find a handful. If you have any of these programs please let me know.

Country Corner

Couple of years ago I found many of these programs. Joe's style was a graceful transition from Hillbilly to modern country. Mr Allison was a songwriter, music executive and a bit of a philosopher.

Nice biography over at http://www.crb.org/hof/hofinductees/1976/joeallison.shtml

Golden Days Of Radio

Gerry Fry sent some sad news: Frank Bresee has had a serious stroke and is recovering in Cedars Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles. His wife tells me this is his third stroke, but is the most serious one and it has affected his speech and movement. He won't be able to record new shows for some time, if ever. He is undergoing physical therapy at the hospital and she hopes to have him back home in early March, where therapy sessions will continue. Frank is 80 years old.

We are running out of money to run our operation. It’s very hard to keep a charity going in the current economy, with most people struggling from paycheck to paycheck. Now, Cease Fire House is in danger of closing its doors forever. I need your help!

I’m Chris Noel. In Hollywood, I did films with Elvis and Steve McQueen. In Vietnam, I performed live, and my radio show was broadcast to our troops, both in Vietnam and worldwide.

Then, in 1993, I founded Vetsville Cease Fire House, a non-profit charity based in Florida that is dedicated to providing food, shelter and care for indigent military veterans.

From a time long, long ago...

*** Updated*** Max Floyd AFN

UPDATE: Max checked in and may be making an aircheck available!!!

Clem Stein suggests we do something with Max Floyd."First off as an OLD AFN'er 62-64 AFN Munich, I just loved my stint doing "Bouncing' in Bavaria." The real star of the station at that time however was Max Floyd, "The Rock and Roll General." Max did "Early Bird," and I believe on the first morning he did the show in 1962 he said, "Road condition RED," by which he meant that it was foggy and you should drive with care. However that was clever Army code and unknown to Max meant that the troops were to go on alert and thus he got an entire division on alert and as any old soldier will tell you that is a hell of a way to start the day.........Max is in the Rock & Roll Hall of fame, and has had a wonderful 50 year life on the radio. A Great movie has been made about Max. It is called: "The Rock and Roll General" the Max Floyd Story. It is 1 hour and 23 minutes long and is Motion Picture by Scott Sheridan copyright 2008 Noblinque Productions LLC. Anybody who likes a warm inspiring story or the AFN network, or great radio, would love this movie so go on line and order it.

WHO HAS AN AIRCHECK????

Wolfman Jack

Wolfman Trivia

He made his final syndicated radio broadcast from a Planet Hollywood restaurant in Washington, DC, on Friday Night, June 30, 1995.

Wolfman Jack was an ordained minister in the Universal Life Church, and was officially known as "Reverend Jack".

Wolfman Jack worked as a disc jockey from 1958 to 1966 for the (then) 250,000 watt radio station XERF (1570 AM) in Ciudad Acuña, Coahuila, Mexico, just across the river from Del Rio, Texas, USA.

He died almost immediately after returning home from a promotional tour for his autobiography, "Have Mercy." He entered his house, hugged his wife, said "Oh, it is so good to be home!" and literally died in his wife's arms.

"Wolfman Jack" was inducted into the Radio Hall of Fame in 1996.

Hit #106 on the Billboard Singles Charts in 1972 with "I Ain't Never Seen a White Man" (Wooden Nickel 0108)

Gene Price

Gene Price had the kind of career that we all could dream of: KDAY, 1966-67; KLAC, 1970-71; KFOX, 1972; KIQQ, 1973-74; KIIS, 1974; KLAC, 1975-84; KIKF, 1985-90; KLAC, 1990-93. Gene seemed to find it kind of hard that we still love to hear these shows.
Thank you Gene and Willard

Jim Pewter 1976

I first heard Jim on AFKN around this time frame and was fascinated at his knowlege of the music. Now it's 35 years later and I still learn from these shows. Jim wrote many of the greatest hits of the 1960s AND was an AFKN vet.
KMET, 1970-73; KRTH, 1973-75; KRLA, 1983-85. Jim has released CDs of Oldies.
