We're still counting the greatest hits of all time. Something I don't understand is the original reels were sequenced 1955, 1957, 1956, 1958. Can't think of a reason for that so they go chronological here.

China 1943
Here's an early 1943 production "Know Your Allies" about China. At the time we even had stations there. Those would be stories I'd love to hear.

Roland Bynum - Soul In Motion
". I did notice a difference in the presentation, and I was trying to ascertain why there was such a difference. I was perhaps more relaxed in the presentations for the AFRTS shows. The audience is different for each of the shows and I was probably more stilted in doing the recruiting shows. Straight no chaser. Also, working with different engineers can make a difference in the presentations also. These are my initial reaction the listening to each of them, and knowing me, I'll be listening to them more than one time."

Wolfman Jack 1974
Back in the Golden Days of Radio stations blocked out Sunday mornings with Public Service programming. Recruiting was a Public Service. Wolfman, Gene Price and Roland Bynum did these programs for Roger Carroll's company. I guess it's some kind of a circle.

Welcome
This whole thing happens because we have a story. If you saved any tapes or disks, please share. There's a lot of people who'd like to hear them and I could certainly make a high quality cd transfer for your collection.
What was your AFRTS/AFN story? What did it mean to you? Why?
Thanks for visiting, if you enjoy it tell a friend!
Best

Jim Pewter
Our friend Chris was growing up in Frankfurt in the 70s and taped a lot of AFN. No way to put a date with any certainty on this, but here's a bunch of Jim Pewter.
"
You might well choose to re-phrase slightly, emphasizing that I was a german kid, and that - as a lot of german kids then - listened to AFN as a daily routine, which helped in improving our english significantly (I have had with some of my teachers a running battle when using american slang, instead of proper (university-style) english as they had been taught); pretty sure US-servicepeople were unaware of germans being part of their general audience!
Quite a few forums exist in which germans emphasize the significant contribution AFN had on them and their lives, it is mentioned there that per year about 100.000 letters were pouring in to AFN in Germany, of which the bigger part was probably AFN Frankfurt (the APO number was I believe APO 057), and I remember getting one of my postcards actually being put "on the air" (you got that clip on the DVD as well, when Jim Powers - the Bostonian - presents "Baby Child" by Robin Luke "going out to Christoph in Offenbach, who hit it right on the head when he said that the most important bridge is "The bridge over troubled water".
Another german ex-AFN-listener - and I believe he has got a definite point on that - actually attributes the german radio-system targeted at young people as it still is today to the very existence of AFN and germans listening to it!
The german public radio stations ran along the lines of the federal states, and were very much targeted to the mature establishment with german Schlager and orchestras. As young germans were listening to AFN (and BFBS) with their stylish, amusing way of presenting modern (i.e. non-german) music, those national chains had to develop similar offerings in order not to loose their grasp on future audience. These turned out to be the "third program series" such as HR3 in Frankfurt, WDR3 in Dusseldorf, SWR3 in Stuttgart, etc. that today are actually the lynchpins of their programs!
I remember as of early 1970s, these made big inroads into the german listeners-base of AFN, with SWR3 being the first specifically youth-oriented radio coming "on the air" with music and presenting techniques very much reminiscent to "my" AFN.
Still, I remained faithful to AFN as You see from the tapes.
regards
Christoph"

Jingles, the Voice of Home.
I loved this jingle package. I was playing it before gold at SCN in the 1980s. I've been looking for it for years and it turned up on the end of a production reel from AFKN in the 1960s.

AFRTS Guantanamo - Bill Stiles
The picture is Miguel Fernandez at WGBY, the AFRTS station at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Today we hear Bill Stiles, with "something for the ladies." 1966. Bill's guest is Dorothy Lamour. Jeremy found the tape: . "Those tapes came so close to getting lost forever. Dorothy Lamour is definitely "old Hollywood" I like her observations about people in Hollywood going out and spending money to seem rich." I totally agree. Great radio and thanks for sharing!
She would be totally lost in today's Hollywood scene.

He sure had the magic. Only one we'd get complaints about. Wolfman could connect to the troops in the field. Complaints would come from Colonels, compliments would come from Corporals. We got him a better time slot.
