Vance Graham 1973

KMPCs Vance Graham sees Amelia Earhart off.

Latino! A special program presented five times a week. With Victor, at your service.

"Victor" was Vance Graham.  An announcer whose career went back to WWII when he was doing news at KMPC.  Later he worked at KFI.  Prior to Latino, Vance did the "Bolero Time" program for AFRTS.  "Vance Graham Bolero Show" was a daily feature at KTYM Los Angeles in the 1950s.

We ran TWO Latin shows at the same time? I didn't know this. The other show was Viva!

Charlie Tuna 1973

Photo: Charlie with Jessica Alba

Charlie Tuna?  Always great.  How did he do it, always a great show and as close to perfect consistency than anyone.  There have been a lot of greats over the years but for a Dan Ingram or a Larry Lujack there's changes over the years.  Charlie never really changes, he nailed it..  Let's revisit 1973, it's Thursday.  Stay Tuna'd.

AFN Ray Tubberville 1973

Thanks to Phil for sharing.

Ed Tooma worked with Ray:

Ray and I worked together at AFN Berlin and at the Army Information Radio Service in Washington, D.C. Did we ever have fun doing production. I only wish I had kept the many spots and promo's we voiced together and we did some great character stuff too. Probably one of the most memorable spots was about us standing in that long unemployment line and deciding we'd be better off in the service. It became an AFN Frankfurt Network Radio break spot. Speaking of spots - it sure would be nice if everyone would share their production and send it to Thom so we could all go down memory lane together.

For St Paul to AFKN to Los Angeles, Jim made it happen.  When he got back from Korea and AFKN he started with AFRTS.  Phil would DX AFN Munich.  The weekend starts soon.  Fire up the grill and hear great oldies from Jim Pewter.  It's crazy clothes day!

Charlie Tuna 1973

This was sourced from the mastering reel with the slug still intact.

Charlie was at KKDJ during the week and was squared off against Charlie Van Dyke at his old KHJ home.  Robert W. Morgan was at K-100.  Talk about a radio battle!  But we can treasure the Saturdays at the McCadden studios, making radio like this:

Gene Price 1973

When I arrived in Panama and was settled into the temporary quarters in 1980 there was Gene Price.  Gene and Leonard had a long run on the network.  Gene followed fellow KFOX vet Charlie Williams as one of the AFRTS country voices and truly made the show his own.

AFN Jim Reeves Special 1973

Earl Freudenberg driving the train

It was the anniversary of the plane crash that took his life.  Paul Kryer, one of the PD's. was good friends with Reeves.  He produced his show when he came to Germany.  He asked me to do a special.
That special got a write up in stars and stripes.

Let's take a listen..
