Tom Campbell AFRTS demo 1971

Tom Campbell is one of the AFRTS-LA friends that's been great in keeping this whole thing running.

After serving in the United States Air Force, Campbell was hired for his first radio job, at KEEL in Shreveport, La., by Al Hart, who would later become a newscaster and radio personality in San Francisco. Campbell subsequently worked in Minneapolis, Minnesota and at WONE in Dayton, Ohio before his move to KYA San Francisco in 1967.

In 1971 was one of the periodic restructurings of AFRTS.  They were concerned we'd be rocking too hard..   AFRTS sent a demo...

Tom Campbell 1971

AFRTS network programming was like driving a battleship, small changes when necessary.  In 1971 they got serious about a more contemporary sound.  In the first group were Tom Campbell and Wolfman Jack, with Charlie Tuna to follow shortly.  Here's Tom's first show for AFRTS.

Myron J Bennett 1971

We had some odd filler programs.  Myron J Bennett was a big deal in Des Moines radio for many years.  Apparently "Talk Digest" went out on Mutual and AFRTS picked it up.

I'd always wondered what the deal was with these until I got out of the army and went to work at a very profitable daytimer (in 1984), near Christmas about 15 minutes of news and up to 27 of commercials.  THAT'S what these were designed for.  For us in the early 70s they were shipping shows with strange lengths.  Charlie Tuna, John Doremus and Gary Owens were 45 minutes and it did need some fillers.

Jasin Street 1971

Jay with Joi Lancing

So sometimes it's still a surprise.  I just received a bundle of disks and in there was "Jasin Street".  Never heard of it.  Jay Jasin (Herman Jasinski) started jocking in the late 40s, mostly through the Midwest.  By 1962 he had teamed with Jim Ameche to syndicate a jazz show.  Around then he started acting and was in Spinout and Hillbillies in A Haunted House. In 1971 it was traditional jazz on AFRTS.  We lost Jay in 1984.

Paul Bunyan was very young Tom Campbell

In 1971, Tom Campbell was still the new guy, he did a show about what were the 10 most hated songs on the radio.  There were truly some clinkers...

The music was great and so was Tom Campbell.  Tom was one of the greatest one on one voices and through that was very successful being the voice of several great sponsors.   Tom's still around, and taking your calls...

Jimmy Wakely 1971

I think we can say cowboy music..  Jimmy, in WWII was one of the last cowboy crooners and was a success in recordings, movies, radio and television.  We lost Jimmy to heart failure in 1982.

Tom Campbell 1971

Tom Campbell had an amazing focus.  He just sounds excited and like every last word is important. And it's not an act, he's excited about life,   He really could make reading the phone-book pop.

Pete Smith 1971

When I was in the field, the easy listening shows felt painful. As I "mature" I can understand the genius behind them. Thanks for asking, Chris!

Christmas in Vietnam 1971 - Bruce Blackburn

I couldn't find a biography for Bruce, he may have went to KLAW after his hitch.  But it's early morning Christmas 1971, recorded in DaNang and time for the Orient Express.
