One Night Stand 1962

Well into the 1960s radio had remote broadcasts from the big bands.  AFRTS played these for the troops worldwide on One Night Stand.  A little piece of home.

Si Zentner had a very good band.  Unfortunately, the big bands were dying out.  But they'll always have a magic:

One Night Stand 1944

Normally One Night Stand was re-packaged radio remotes for the troops but in 1944 Esquire Magazine had a vote on the best jazz talent.  There was one of the best all star shows ever.  AFRS was there.

This part of the program originates from Philharmonic Auditorium, Los Angeles. The first tune is, "Mood To Be Wooed." Lionel Barrymore presents an Esky award to Duke Ellington. Johnny Hodges, Lawrence Brown, Harry Carney and Ray Nance also receive awards. . Jerome Kern presents an Esky award to Billie Holiday, Danny Kaye presents awards to Al Casey and Sidney Catlett. Halfway through this program, the AFRS announcer mentions that the nationwide Blue net portion of the broadcast has been concluded and the rest of the show is for the AFRS audience only

One Night Stand 1964

One Night Stand was the AFRTS package of big band remotes.  It had been broadcast through the 40s 50s and 60s.  Leon Keltner had the classy society orchestra in New Orleans.  This recording is from WWL/CBS in 1964, roughly the same time that Cal LaMartiniere was the booth announcer for these programs, the announcer  (Don Lewis) sounds similar to Cal, possibly an influence?

One Night Stand - Lionel Hampton 1947

One Night Stand was on for decades featuring the best bands in the land.  AFM and the networks sent in live remote broadcasts which were repackaged.  Some of these really were the best, like this one with vibraphone master Lionel Hampton.

One Night Stand - 1955

One Night Stand had a 20 year run.  Radio had broadcasts from the big bands from all over the country, sometimes aired locally, sometimes over one of the CONUS network.  Starting in WWII they sent recordings of these shows to AFRS.  I wish I had both parts of this but it's a 1955 visit with Les Elgart, from the roof of the Hotel Astor in NYC.

One Night Stand - 1962 Teddy Wilson

This is my favorite "One Night Stand". The show was mostly big band remotes from all over the country.  It's surprising how many orchestras were working well into the 1960s.  Mostly regional ones that never had a national impact, but take 12-20 musicians playing well with good scores and it can be great.

"One Night Stand" wasn't always big bands.  Teddy Wilson was a great pianist on hundreds of sessions backing Benny Goodman, Billie Holiday and the rest of the best.

One Night Stand - 1959

The great big bands continued touring well into the 1970s.  In the 1940s, 50s and 60s AFRTS aired remote broadcasts of the best on One Night Stand.  On this night in 1955 it was the music of Charlie Barnet from the Hollywood Palladium

One Night Stand - 1945 - Cab Calloway

For "One Night Stand" AFRTS would repackage music remotes from the states.  It started during WWII and continued for about 20 years.  Cab Calloway was a great talent.  I had him on the show once when I was a boy DJ in Minneapolis.  In 1973 him and Anita O'Day were in a packaged oldies show.  Great music then, great music now.
