National Guard Assembly 1947

Paul Whiteman with Hildegard

I was copying a bunch of AFRS ETS and saw "National Guard Assembly".  I thought it was another normal recruiting show.  In 1947 The Guard was doing a show on ABC with bandleader Paul Whiteman.  This would have been around the time that Roger Carroll was a staff announcer there, unfortunately not on this program..

This is the story 1947

A few years ago I picked up a lot of these and am finally getting to the transfers.  Network did a great job explaining issues.  This time a dramatization about how hunger led to Mussolini.

The Philippines, Pearl of the Orient 1947

In the late 1940s, radio was changing.  AFRS had a mission of educating and did several productions of their own with great casts.  In 1947  Daws Butler and Howard Culver starred in this production of "Pearl Of The Orient" a story of the Philippines.

Merry Christmas 1947

Three G. I.'s in Germany, away from home at Christmas time for the first time, try to share the holiday spirit. Edmund Penny, Frank Gerstle, Howard Culver, Irvin Lee, James W. Talbot (producer), Jerry Farber, Richard Crenna, Rye Billsbury, Steve Allen (writer).

I know that MacGregor produced similar material to this (under a contract for AFRS)

One Night Stand - Lionel Hampton 1947

One Night Stand was on for decades featuring the best bands in the land.  AFM and the networks sent in live remote broadcasts which were repackaged.  Some of these really were the best, like this one with vibraphone master Lionel Hampton.

Concert Hall 1947

We did a lot of classical music.  During WWII, Lionel Barrymore started doing "Concert Hall" with live performances.   The program continued for many years.  Edward Grieg's "A Minor Concerto" in a 1947 broadcast.  Recently I've picked up a lot of great classical broadcasts.

Hold High The Torch - 2nd Marine Division - 1947

In the late 1940s AFRS did many shows to explain the mission.  A lot of why and how.  Glenn Ford had spent WWII as a Marine.  He stars in this production highlighting the Marines in Tarawa. Take a listen.

Leatherneck Legends - 1947

In 1947 the Marines teamed with NBC to tell their story in "Leatherneck Legends" "Landing At Waya". A doctor on a small island in the South Pacific needs a bottle of iodine. The Marine Corps investigates the murder of two traders and find themselves in a battle with three hundred savages. A recruiting message was read live near the end of the program. Tiny Ruffner (announcer)

Voyage of the Scarlet Queen - 1947

Voyage of the Scarlet Queen was a Mutual show, starring Eliott Lewis.  The nautical setting was a great fit for AFRTS.  It was reissued several times. This is from a 1961 reissue.

AFRTS anniversary - Command Performance 1947

2017 will be the 75th anniversary of AFRTS.  The 70th was largely ignored.  What should we do about it?  LaRita Shelby was saying that we could have the beginnings of a committee on this.  There's enough lead time.  Who has ideas?

In 1947 the network was five years old, and the stars came out..

Music From Your Hometown - 1947

One of the nicer things about being the Voice of Home were things like this.  Stations would send acetates of broadcasts to the network.  These would be made into new shows.
Leo Reisman - 1919
From roughly 1947 this is a "Music From Your Hometown" with Leo Reisman.  Reisman had been around since the early 20s.  By then he had a hotel band playing sweet music.  So from 1030 WBZ Boston, here's Leo Reisman:

USMC Birthday

237th birthday of the Corps.  Here's how the network celebrated it 60 years ago.
