Bob Kingsley 1978

Bob's association with AFRTS dates back to the 1950s when he was part of the team in Iceland, famously leaving his mark by carving his name into a board. After leaving, his success grew, and he produced an album rock show for AFRTS, with several episodes available online. He then became the renowned voice of American Country Countdown in 1974, a role he held for 27 years. Here is Bob's inaugural ACC broadcast.

Bob Kingsley 1975

Somehow it still amazes me.  Bob Kingsley was a really good rock jock.  He was one of us.  He'd done a tour at our Iceland station.  Bob later went on to be the voice of country music on American Country Countdown.    In 1975, it was time to rock.

Charles Goyette remembers that picture " I was also more than a little surprised to see myself on the page in a photo with Bob Kingsley at SCN.  That was in summer of ’72.  Also in the shot are LtC. Dan Maguire (our CO and a very fine man), Tom Colvin, John Fisher, Bob Rupp, Paul Warhanik, and Phil Lane.  I’m surprised the talented Lee McGowan wasn’t in that shot.

We were good hosts to Kingsley during his visit to Panama.  And some time later Bob was an equally good host when Lee, Gerry Fry, and I visited him in L.A.  As I recall, Robert Fuller, the actor in TV westerns like Wagon Train, was Bob’s brother-in-law.  Among other things, Bob took us on the lot for a shooting of the series Emergency that Fuller was starring in.

Great seeing that picture again!"

Bob Kingsley 1973

For those of us "a certain age" Bob Kingsley WAS the American Country Countdown.  That's why listening to his AFRTS rock show is so fascinating.  It's a style that really bridges the gap.  Take a listen:

With American Country Countdown Bob Kinglsy was the Dean of Country music.  Before that came together he was one of us, first with the Air Force in Iceland (love to hear an aircheck of that)  and later at McCadden Place rocking up a storm.

Bob Kingsley 1979

If you've been around here for a while, you've heard Bob Kingsley.  He did a rock show for the network in the mid-70s.  After that it was worldwide fame with American Country Countdown.

Bob was one of us, he did a tour at the Iceland station.  Rumor has it that he carved his name into the board.  There have been a lot of requests for this.  Bob Kingsley 1979

Bob Kingsley at SCN Panama 1972

Bob was a heck of a jock, he was Mr. American Country Countdown, but before that it was slamming rock on the AFRTS Bob Kingsley show.
