Turn Back the Clock 1961

So what exactly were oldies in the mid 50s?  Here's a good place to start.  Andy and Virginia Mansfield got their show on the air on the west coast, on NBC and then on AFRTS.

Turn Back The Clock 1958

Turn Back the Clock was a regional show that ended up on NBC (regional?) in 1955.  They came over to AFRTS and shared songs from their personal collection.  They've got some good ones today.

Turn Back The Clock 1958

Andy Mansfield and Kay Starr

Turn Back the Clock was a fascinating show.  Andy and Virginia Mansfield were playing the songs of 20 and 30 years ago. Of course in the mid-50s that could mean Al Jolson and acoustic cylinders.  Let's revisit 1958 and Turn Back The Clock.

Andy Mansfield 1964

Andy Mansfield had a long run with AFRTS, from Turn Back The Clock in the 50s to America's Popular Music in the 1960s he had those oldies.  In 1964 he did a tribute to Glenn Miller..  Here's Part 10.

Andy Mansfield 1958

Andy and Virginia Mansfield share some highlights of their record collection, and they're excited about it.  That always makes for great listening.  Andy had to build special shed to store his collection.  Hmmm...

Andy went on to do other shows for AFRTS for many years.

Andy Mansfield 1963

In 1963 the loss of Glenn Miller was still fresh.  Here's part two of Andy Mansfield's tribute.  He did a great job and talked with a lot of the people that knew Glenn.

Andy Mansfield 1963

In 1963 it really hadn't been that long since we lost MAJ Glenn Miller during WWII.  Glenn entertained the troops and cut a lot of exclusive music for AFRS and V Disc. Andy Mansfield did a five part tribute.

Andy Mansfield 1963

Andy Mansfield loved his oldies, but when you start doing an oldies show in the 1950s we hear big band and before.  His first show was with his wife but always it was some of his favorites from his collection.

America's Popular Music 1061

Andy and Virginia Mansfield

Andy did a bunch of shows, starting with Turn Back the Clock, America's Popular Music.  I wouldn't surprise me if there were others.  It's a great look at the earliest popular music.

Andy Mansfield 1964

It wasn't really a big band show, it was the oldies from 20-30 years prior. Andy Mansfield did "Turn Back the Clock" with his wife Virginia in the 50s. In the 1960s it had become America's Popular Music. (in the picture, Andy Mansfield, Kay Starr and a REALLY big microphone)

Andy Mansfield 1967

Andy Mansfield did his first oldies show with AFRTS in the 1950s.  Andy and his wife Virginia "Turn Back the Clock" featured music from the turn of the century to the 1950s.  In the 1960s the show was more focused and renamed "America's Popular Music".  Here's a 1967 visit.

America's Popular Music 1965

Andy Mansfield  was with the network in the 1950s and 60s, playing records from his own collection.
Andy's original show was "Turn Back the Clock" with  his wife, former big band singer Virginia.  Always some interesting choices...

Andy Mansfield 1962

Andy and Virginia

Andy Mansfield must have had quite a record collection.  He played the oldies starting in the 1950s well into the 1960s, first with wife Virginia on Turn Back the Clock.  The later show was Americas Popular music.  Lots of big band music but visits back to acoustic records of the 1910s..
