Before I joined the Navy in 1970 I was a part time gofer at WQXI 790 in Atlanta where I learned ratio from some of the greats...Skinny Bobby Harper...Randy Robins (who is still a close friend here in the Atlanta area) ..Bob Bolton, Barry Chase. Went into Navy and went to Iceland as first duty station. Found my way to the quanset hut where AFRTS was and got them to let me go on air all nights on my time off from my regular job as a CT (communications technician) on the base. Loved it and yes we did have fans. The board was old - big cumbersome and what I would call a boat anchor. Found out later DJ Bob Kingsley was there when he was in the service and saw where he had actually carved his name in the control board....
Went to my next duty station in San Juan (guess they wanted to thaw me out) after a year in Iceland. I was there for 2 years and was able to get part time jobs at WBMJ 1190 (air name Scott Brady) and - WIAC-FM and a new start up station WRAI before discharge in 1974. Went back to Atlanta although got offers from those stations in PR.
Went to work for WGST here in Atlanta and lost that job because they went NEWS. Worked for MCA Records for a while and got out of radio. I spent about 8 years in radio. Should have stuck with it. I did do a little time in 2000 at WLKQ -FM with Randy Robins here in Atlanta.
I have been here at Ricoh since 1976 and about to hang it up soon. I sure miss radio. I am however a voting member of the Georgia Radio Hall of Fame since 2007 so I still dabble in it.

GI Jill
GI Jill with Bing Crosby
Martha Wilkerson (1908-99) was the first star built by the network. During WWII she inherited the program GI Jive. That was our response to Tokyo Rose and many similar shows being broadcast to our troops. GI Jive was focused on the current hits. Eventually there was an oldies show "Jill's All Time Jukebox", playing memories.
She continued with the network until at least 1949.

Date with Chris was Chris's second show for AFRTS. Before that she was in "Small World" a show largely of features. Did a great job there and A Date With Chris was born. It's Friday in the second week of the show.

Suspense 1961
AFRTS played a lot of Old Time Radio. Some places we didn't have television. Some places we had television, but there were so many programming restrictions that it was hard to enjoy. Sometimes the troops were in the field without televisions. Most radio dramas from the 40s and 50s were available and reissued well into the 1980s.
"Suspense" was one of the last radio dramas, finally being cancelled in 1962. This disk is the 1961 issue of a program broadcast on CBS October 8, 1961 "Dreams" starring Phillip Sterling.

The Pop Chronicles was originally done for KRLA in 1969, inspired by the Monterey Pop Festival by John Gilliand. The entire series is online at the University of Texas. Click here to hear it.

The World of Folk Music was an interesting show. First Oscar Brand did a conventional Folkie show, then the ones I've heard were great profiles of country music. Ed Masters, International Man Of Mystery
I was paging through an AFKN yearbook. I knew all of the places and some of the people. Ed Masters I've always wondered about. Ed came to AFKN from FEN (prior to John Buey) during the Korean War, was there when I was 25 years later. Well over 30 years as a DAC is a story in itself. Ed's legs were were handicapped. He never was. His pain had him awake and monitoring the network 24 hours a day. I'd make a mistake. Ed's on the batphone patiently explaining how to do it correctly. I learned a lot. At the time it was said that he was a rising star in radio, his niece said that a motorcycle accident put an end to that. Normally such things are easy enough to get details about. Ed just seems to start with the Korean war,
